Stop the Killing: Active Assailants in Healthcare

Topic:

Active assailant events are occurring in healthcare at an alarming rate. In this conversation, Tony will be joined by Katherine (Kate) Schweit, a licensed attorney and retired FBI Agent. Kate spent nearly five years as the executive responsible for the FBI’s active shooter efforts. Tony and Kate will discuss security assessment efforts including access, egress, and a particular focus on doors as suggested by Kate in her book "Stop the Killing," where she stresses that initial security assessments should begin with doors and locks, as they are "the most critical physical aspect of security in any building." These include doors people weren’t able to lock in time, allowing a shooter to gain access. “Front doors are the most common point of entry…but not always…the Columbine shooters entered through the back”.

Together, Tony and Katherine will discuss key participants in the development of the Active Shooter and Hostile Event Response Plan and dive into other critical factors that impact preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery efforts that healthcare facilities can implement to combat this unthinkable issue.

Body-Worn Cameras in Healthcare Security

Topic:

In this session, Tony is joined by Alan Butler, past president of IAHSS and System Director of Public Safety & Security at Cox Health, to discuss the benefits of implementing body-worn camera technology (captured audio and video) inside of healthcare. Body-worn cameras have shown to significantly reduce legal and reputational risk for organizations and are expected to be standard equipment in most healthcare security programs in the next few years.

The two discuss how healthcare organizations can combat misinformation or inaccurate interpretations of how events unfold and help protect the organization while demonstrating transparency. Their discussion touches on the additional benefits that come from using captured footage as a valuable teaching tool for personnel and a means to deter undesired behavior.

Security Measures for Prisoner Patient Care and Safety

Topic:

In this conversation, Tony & Bryan will discuss the security measures that should be in place to safely care for the prisoner patient. This will include an overview of important policy expectations, a discussion on the power of orienting custodial agency and clinical staff and how to overcome some of the frequent decision-making challenges often associated when caring for these high-risk patients.

Guidance will be provided on best practices associated with the built environment as well as an interesting conversation around the data surrounding prisoner escape attempts from healthcare. This is another can't-miss session surrounding one of the highest-risk processes within healthcare.

Preparing for the Fallout of Roe vs Wade Reversal

Topic: The Roe vs Wade reversal has generated a lot of emotions in society, and that is something those of us in healthcare security must recognize and prepare for. In this conversation, our host Tony York will be joined by Kat Kemper, Ph.D., CHPA and Robert Burns and dive into the history of violence that has stemmed from such a heated issue and the lessons learned from the past.

The group will discuss the foreseen impacts that the reversal may have on a healthcare security program. Kat and Robert will also share their unique perspective on some evolved practices for how to monitor the threat environment as well as discuss some important mitigation techniques including how to have conversations with key stakeholders that go beyond the threats of violence.
